VANISHES INTO THE NIGHT

The painting series Vanishes into the Night takes the viewer on a theatrical journey through extraordinary experiences born on the stage. The title of the collection is inspired by the production Long Day's Journey Into Night, directed by Merle Karusoo and premiered at Estonian Drama Theatre in 2008.

Vanishes into the Night is the second part of Toomas Pikhof’s 54-painting collection, UNFORGETTABLE. Shades Empowered by Theatre Art.

The paintings form a distinct and cohesive whole, inviting viewers on an emotional and deeply evocative journey through unforgettable experiences inspired by theatre. Through abstract painting, moments preserved as visual sensations carry the intensified shades of psychological drama, historical novels, and tragic love stories encountered on the stage, highlighting the importance of theatre in shaping human emotional growth.

Every painting in the collection was inspired by well-known and acclaimed theatrical productions. In earlier years, the artist worked for a combined fifteen years at Estonian Youth Theatre and the Estonian Drama Theatre, participating in the creative teams behind numerous new productions. Each season, the theatres premiered between twelve and fourteen new performances. It was a fascinating and richly colorful period that left a profound impression on the artist.

For this reason, the paintings of the collection are dedicated to directors, stage designers, actors, and all those who work behind the scenes in the captivating world of theatre — often unseen, yet essential to every production.

The collection Vanishes into the Night was first presented at the gallery of the Pirita Leisure Centre from September 2 to October 11, 2024.
